Why is the street lighting sometimes left on during the day?

Sometimes the public lighting is left on even during daylight hours. There are three possibilities:

Street lighting during daytime

  • Very probably repair work is being carried out. This is done during the day. The technicians switch on some or all of the lamps in the street. This enables them to see which lamps are not working. They then carry out the necessary repairs. After that, the lamps stay on until the following morning. Then they go off automatically.

  • Only when the street lighting or part of it remains on for longer than 48 hours is it definitely a malfunction. This does happen from time to time. In that case, do not hesitate to report the problem.

  • The public lighting goes on and off automatically. This is done via a signal from Elia (link in French), the operator of the Belgian high-voltage grid. If this signal does not come through in the morning, all the lamps in the public lighting system stay on. This is extremely rare and is quickly rectified.
