What conditions does the room containing my energy meters have to fulfil?

As an owner or tenant, you have to take care of the area surrounding your meter. Abide by the following instructions.

  • The room must be dry and well ventilated.
  • Your meters and cabling must be free and easily accessible. Do not hang anything on them or put anything in front of them.
  • Keep the room clean and tidy.
  • Make sure the meters can be clearly read.

Safe and secure: clean and tidy, dry and well ventilated.

The room containing your meters must be clean and tidy. Make sure that the meters are always easily accessible and clearly readable. This is to ensure that the meter can be read quickly and easily.

The room must also be dry and well ventilated. This is important not only for the meters to work properly, but also in the interests of safety. So bear in mind the following properties of gas and electricity:

  • Natural gas can accumulate in an enclosed space. Because natural gas is lighter than air, good natural ventilation at the top of the room is necessary. The ideal solution is a ventilation grid in the ceiling.
  • The combination of damp and electricity increases the risk of a short circuit and is therefore dangerous.

In Brussels, both meters are installed and sealed by Sibelga, your distribution system operator. It is forbidden to break the seals at all times and in all circumstances. The meter reading is also done by Sibelga.

When you move to a new home, identify your meter and check that it works properly (in particular that the seal is still there).

Checking your meters from time to time while you are using gas or electricity is definitely a good idea. Then you’ll see straight away whether they are working properly. If you notice a problem, inform Sibelga.
